On Tuesday 21 October 2025, FSCS declared Cheshire Neighbours Credit Union Limited (CNCU) in default and confirmed that it has ceased trading.
Before this date, CNCU had been winding down. It has made attempts to contact members to return their funds to them. FSCS is aware that many members have already had their funds returned by CNCU over the last few years.
If you’ve already had your funds returned by CNCU at any point before Tuesday 21 October 2025, you don’t need to contact FSCS. If you’ve already received your money from CNCU, you will not be entitled to any additional payments from FSCS.
If you haven’t received your funds from CNCU before Tuesday 21 October 2025, please do not worry. Your money is safe.
In this case, any eligible deposit you held with CNCU is protected by FSCS, the UK’s deposit guarantee scheme. As CNCU is now in default, FSCS will step in to repay your money. Where FSCS has been able to verify up-to-date contact details for customers, we will automatically pay back your money.

I had an account with CNCU and I’ve not received my funds back from them at any point before 21 October 2025, what do I need to do to get my money back and when will I receive it?
If you still had an account with CNCU on 21 October 2025 and you haven't received payment from FSCS within 7 working days, please call us on 0800 678 1100 or e-mail enquiries@fscs.org.uk.
I had an account with CNCU and I’ve not received my funds back from them at any point before 21 October 2025. I’ve received a letter from FSCS but this didn’t include a cheque. What should I do?
Please call us on 0800 678 1100 or e-mail enquiries@fscs.org.uk. You should find these contact details on the letter we sent you.
I’ve received a cheque from FSCS. How has FSCS calculated my payment? What should I do if I disagree with this amount?
The information FSCS has received from CNCU confirms your individual balance. The amount you receive will be the balance of your account(s) as of Monday 20 October 2025.
If you disagree with this amount, you should still bank your cheque so that you can receive your funds.
You should then contact us and provide us with evidence so that we can investigate your query. You can call us on 0800 678 1100 or e-mail enquiries@fscs.org.uk.
Do not return your payment to FSCS unless you are specifically asked to do so.
I don’t have another bank account that I can direct my payment from FSCS into, what should I do?
You will need to open an account urgently with a bank, building society or credit union so that you can make your payment into this account and access your funds.
If you wish to open an account with a credit union, you can get information about credit unions from the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL) website or the ACE Credit Union Services website.
If you’re based in Scotland, you can get information about credit unions by checking the website of the Scottish League of Credit Unions.
If you need help opening a bank account, your local Citizens Advice Bureau should be able to help you. Alternatively, please visit your local high street bank or building society.
