New FSCS consumer research series begins with Pensions and SIPPs

Financial services is one of the UK’s most vibrant industries with stakeholders across the sector committed to continuous improvements and innovations that will deliver the best outcomes for consumers. As we moved into the 2020s, one of the key challenges we identified was that people are expected to make more sophisticated decisions about the financial products they engage with, and in particular about their retirement savings. With choice comes greater risk and the need for better information and advice.

Our new series of consumer research papers aims to share the results of exclusive FSCS research on consumer trends, attitudes and behaviours towards financial products and the protection that FSCS provides, highlighting opportunities for us all to improve consumer outcomes and help ensure people can make informed and confident financial choices.

In the first of our series we take a deeper look at pensions and self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs) and explore:

  • Why consumers choose to invest in pensions and SIPPs
  • Awareness and understanding of FSCS protection for pension or SIPPs
  • How customers can check if their pension is protected
  • The gender pensions gap and continued differences in pensions and SIPPs between men and women.
